Let's start at the beginning... pH stands for potential of hydrogen. A pH indicator measures the concentration of hydrogen ions (which is a whole other lesson...) in a substance, or in other words, how acidic something is. pH levels are measured with numbers as shown below.

There are many ways to test pH levels. The method I used was with concentrated red cabbage juice, which turns whatever touches it purple. I don't really know why—something about the chemical in red—but the cabbage juice will turn a different color when something acidic or alkaline mixes with it.

There is a paper you can use called, litmus paper, my homemade version is just white coffee filter soaked in cabbage juice, and dried. Super acidic things will turn a reddish-pink such as the lime juice, and vinegar. Super alkaline things will turn a yellowish-green like the baking soda, and windex. Neutral things will stay the same. When I did the bleach, I think it just bleached the paper instead of having a chemical reaction, which was kind of sad...

This is the cabbage juice, because you're not supposed to use much water the juice got really dark, and in the right lighting looked like red wine. When I was drying the litmus paper, it got all over me and dyed my hands purple...

This is the "recipe" thing I used, and highly recommend doing this because it was a blast!
