The Hobbit is a book written by J.R.R. Tolkien and is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. He lives in 'Middle Earth' which has many different sentient species such as dwarves, goblins, trolls, elfs, dragons, humans, and many other fictional animals. His story is one full of adventure and heroism.
Bilbo Baggins is a high-class, well-liked hobbit with lots of money and a good house, which they call a 'hobbit hole' because they build it into the ground. He lived a simple (yet luxurious) life in his hobbit neighborhood until an old wizard named Gandalf convinced Bilbo to go on an adventure with him and 13 other dwarves: Balin, Dwalin, Kili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Thorin, Fili, and Glóin. The object of this adventure is to steal back all the treasure that used to belong to Thorin's father but was taken by a terrifying dragon named Smaug. Along the journey, Bilbo fights monsters, saves the dwarves, and finds magical items, one of which is from a frightening creature named Gollum.
There are a few main characters in The Hobbit, and like every good story, there is a protagonist, which is Bilbo Baggins. In the beginning of the book, Bilbo Baggins did not want to go on the adventure with Gandalf, yet ended up going because Gandalf and the 13 dwarves persuaded him. He started off pretty slow and unwilling, not wanting to be with his companions. The dwarves questioned Gandalf's choice of Bilbo and his desire to have the usual 6-7 meals a day for a hobbit, but as the plot continues, Bilbo grows more adventurous and ends up saving the dwarves multiple times, gaining their trust and respect, just as Gandalf said he would.
Out of the 13 dwarves, only Thorin is a main character. He's the leader of the dwarves and the heir to all the treasure Smaug is hoarding. At the start, Thorin was very treasure-oriented; at this point, he felt as if everything was out to get him and his treasure, but we didn't really see that side of him until the last few chapters when he is beyond reason. Graciously, Thorin eventually ends up being way less treasure-oriented and has a happy ending.
The last main character is Gandalf, an old, powerful, wise, mysterious wizard who can see others' potentials before anyone else can. He doesn't develop much in the story, but he is a very significant character who happens to be in other books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Gandalf has a remarkable resemblance to the resurrected Christ because Tolkien said that the gospels were pretty awesome.*
The Hobbit was a very good read and I recommend it. It is written in an older English, so sometimes it's harder to comprehend, but other than that I can't really say anything bad about the book and strongly suggest you read it if you haven't already.
